This article really came off the wrong way to me, i didnt feel what it was the writer wanted me to feel after reading it. I felt more like she was actually being racist rather than trying to stop it. She ended up just pointing out every way that she could think of that she was better off than other races. Nobody told her that she would get special treatment for any of the occurances she wrote in her list, she just assumed that it would happen. Isnt that thinking a bit racist? I mean personally I wouldn't think that how someones body odor smelled would reflect their race, maybe that they should take a shower and get some clean clothes, but no matter what race they were it wouldnt affect my thoughts about that person. And even if that thought was in the back of my mind as an "Invisible system conferring dominance of my group", i would choose not to believe that thought because its absurd that the persons race should be represented by some stinky person.
I do agree that blacks and other non-white races see alot of racism where we live and that it should definitely stop. But i dont think that this article is the way to do it. In conluding her article she pointed out that we should raise our consciousness on the prerequisites of being light skinned. Why? Why not raise our consciousness on the prerequisites of considering everyone equal? Bringing up the idea that white people have it so much better than other races where we live just adds to the tension. Its not that I am saying we shouldn't be aware of racism, I am saying that in order to overcome the race barrier we have to each individually forget that we are even a different race. Its impossible to be racist to someone if you dont even consider them a different race than yourself. And no I don't mean assimlating the entire planet into one big pot, so that there arent even any races to be racist about. I mean respect the beliefs of other races and religons and still see them as just another human being.
